Since 1960, Eckels Pottery in beautiful Bayfield, Wisconsin, has been bringing quality handcrafted ceramics to the general public. The studio is a family affair with the venerable Robert Eckels and his talented daughter, Deanna, guiding a staff of experienced professionals and aspiring apprentices. All potters complete their individual creations from lump of clay to finished pot, in clear view of visitors to the studio who return year after year to enjoy the lure of Lake Superior and the Eckels experience.

Bob Eckels

Bob Eckels
Originally a painter and sculpture, Robert Eckels has for the past 50 years applied these aesthetic elements to his expressions in clay. He was a college professor for 25 years and has run his own professional studio since 1960. He has exhibited widely in a number of media; his pottery can be found in innumerable collections both here and abroad.

Robert passed away in 2004. His daughter, Deanna, now owns and operates Eckels Pottery.

"My stoneware reflects the character of the clay and the process by which it is formed. I expect each final piece to exhibit all the aspects of the aesthetic attributes of fine sculptural form. Every pot should be a pleasure to look at as well as to hold."

Deanna Eckels

Resume & Exhibits

Deanna Eckels
Deanna has grown up in a family of artists. Her first experiences with clay happened as a child playing in her fathers studio in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Now, as a second generation potter, she has developed a love for porcelain clay and is exhibiting her work throughout the country. Living on Lake Superior has been very influential in the designs she uses in her work. The colors and the wildlife are reflections of her deep love for the environment in which she lives.

"On a canvas of white porcelain I can create personal expressions through color, texture, and story. My background in functional pottery is the vehicle through which I illustrate these expressions. I believe art should be part of our every day lives and I hope that my work brings joy to all those who use it. Having the opportunity to carry on a family tradition while using my creative skills has made me extremely grateful. I hope now to begin to share with others all that I have learned through the creative process."

Apprentices
Inspired by the apprenticeship models of Hamada and Leach, Eckels Pottery established its unique program in 1960, inviting apprentices to participate in all phases of the studio pottery operation. Since then, scores of young potters have gained the necessary experience to launch their professional careers. At a 25th anniversary reunion in 1985, former apprentices from throughout the country returned to celebrate their common experiences.
